Monday Appt.

Well, 8:30 appt… here we are! Arrive and they tell us they have us down for 1:30…I don’t think so…I have my card. Fill out paper work and wait….with one impatient person I might add. If  you have not taken a Bridges Man to the hospital or a doc. visit, then consider yourself blessed!!! They are just not good at waiting or sitting still! I believe this would be unanimous if I took a vote among the women in this family…and many others I am sure. We keep telling them to shh, hush, be quiet until we just give up & start laughing at them. THEY WILL SAY…JUST HOW LONG IS THIS GONNA TAKE, I been sitting here for an hour, I have stuff I need to go and do! Like the doc is on their schedule! We are really laughing because we know they call you back & you think you are going to be seen…not….they take you to another waiting room!!!Hee!

They x-ray his hand, we get to the room, they un-bandage it…& the non-stick stuff helped…yeah!!!

Clean it again…yuck. But it is healing. Doc checks out the x-ray, admiring his work!!! I see the pins and I can also see the other break in the thumb…clean down to the joint. Then he tells us that if that does not hold together he will have to go in & put in another screw….take a break….while I slap the doc…..Cole’s said…I don’t want that!!!! They were able to put the soft cast on and maybe next week take out the stitches & put on the hard cast. His hand is wrapped up more now than before!!! But at least it is more protected now! I believe I was confused…I think this is the day we took the computer & ate…oh well, after all this, why would I know what day it is anyway!!!   Guess what time our next appt is….yep….8:30….does he not realize that I can not sleep at night???

Saturday

We decided we would take Cole to eat breakfast Saturday & get him out of the house a little. Sarah joined us…she has been a trooper taking care of Cole!!! Cole really did not want to see & talk to anyone, but it was not real busy! Those pain meds just make you not very sociable…how does anyone get hooked on Lortab (sp)…they make us feel yucky!  We ate, went to visit his dogs and he washed those pens out with just that one hand…would not let his Dad help him!!! Went to the barn & let him check out his deer he had mounted. He also checked out the gun that blew up on him. Still puzzled about what happened. Got someone checking out the gun, hopefully they can tell us what happened. We need to know to help others not have this trouble…we know to many hunters….and had this been a child or a lady…well, we would not have come out as well. Cole has a tough, big old hand! Besides that we know God was taking care of him!!!

Friday’s visit

Friday is was raining cats and frogs! We had to keep the hand dry!!! I pulled up close to his house…got the umbrella, got him in the car and we headed to the doc. Had to get the bandage off & wound cleaned! She took off the bandage, cleaned it out. It looked a lot better to me Friday than Thursday! Taking off the bandage without the pre-wrap…it was pretty painful…I am so glad he decided to let them change it!!! We went and took his computer to get fixed, then to get a sling to put his arm in----elevated---not as much pain!!!! Next we picked up some BBQ from Smokin Pig!!! Yum. Sarah met us at his house and we enjoyed our meal! I was soaking wet. It was rather funny, me with the umbrella helping him, let alone opening the doors for him! He is still faster than me with one hand!!! Oh yes….I stuffed my pants in my boots to keep them dry…..who cares!!! It is like a brown top..black shoes!!!   A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do!!! Back to doc on Monday…of course he made an 8:30 appointment….me must go to bed Sunday…early!!!

Post Surgery

We have our little beeper in the waiting room & I am getting concerned. Taking to long!!! Guess what…it did not go off, but never fear…we are right by the desk! We go to talk to the Dr. He got every thing cleaned out, took out the lead except for one that is to deep…shh..don’t tell Cole!!! If it bothers him…they will go & get it too!  Put in the plate & three screws, still another break, but it is straight & he will leave it for now, he will cast him after the open wound has time to heal. The open would was quite large, could do a skin graft, but either way there will be a scar…one scar or two…that is the way it is. No major arteries were hit, no ligaments were hit…thank-you Lord!!!

We go back to waiting room until he gets to his room. Sarah and I go to the restroom….I walked right to the men's room….thank-you Sarah for saving me from going right on in there!!!

He gets back to his room, he is wide awake!

Winston had to call & tell a guy that Cole would not be able to guide the quail hunt Thursday. Cole not happy about that at all!!! Then the phone calls began to flood in…..thank-you Lord for family and friends!

Cayla told Cole that he had beat her on this one. He had to have surgery & spend the night in the hospital…he told her that he wasn’t trying to beat her! In case you don’t know….when she was around 15…a friend of our family….and he is kin folk….was out at our place, his strap ha d broken for his pistol and he had it in his shorts pocket…in the holster---it fell our of his pocket, she was standing behind & to the side of him, it went in one of her thighs-out the other side, into the other thigh and landed in her buttocks area. One day I will tell about this event!

They are taking years off of our lives!!! Now you know why I am crazy…have every right to be!!!

God is our rock!

Surgery

The OR nurses came to get Cole for surgery, they were so nice and funny. Cole was cutting up with them also, telling them his name was Fred Wilson…feeling good!!! Sarah and I escorted him, I went back to sign papers and answer questions. Everyone wanted to check out his hand & ask what happened. Dr. Wright was his anesthesiologist and Dr Agerou(sp) was the surgeon. They were so nice! Doc told us that he would have to get out the few beads he had in his hand, pull the skin as much as he could to close up the open wound and he would put in a plate with three screws. He also would have to clean every thing really well and infection would be the biggest concern for a while. They rolled him away & I went to sit with Sarah and Cayla in the waiting room. Not fun! It took longer than what he expected, Winston had time to get back before the surgery was finished.  Bart, Casey & Ryan joined us also. Kari Barry came & sat with us for a bit…I was supposed to get my hair colored today….not….and I did not wash it thinking she was going to do it so I would just wait…bad idea! I have on a brown sweater and my black ugg boots…..my hair looks terrible and I do not care!!! My purse has black & brown on it…but my hair????

More to come! Bedtime!

What the day may bring…part III

I walked straight to ER 4, opened the door, and went to see my baby boy…who is now a 25 year old man, but still my baby! I went and looked at his hand…can you believe it???? I did & normally…I would not…I would pass out! But, I was on a mission….I had to see how bad it was. Now, it was not pretty. It was charred from the gun powder, busted wide open..but he had all of his fingers and his thumb was still attached. Thank-you God for his blessing!!! He was in pain, but handling it. He said….look that gun about blew my hand off, my hand is messed up. He also said that if he did not have bad luck he would have none at all!!! I told him, I know…but be thankful that you still have a hand, a face and all of your fingers. Then X-ray come in & take films. They call in the ortho doctor. In the mean time, I talk to Cole and ask him what hand he wipes with…he is a lefty on  many things…writing, eating. We are in luck..he is a righty on that! It’s been a long time on that one! The DR. comes in & tells us that he will need surgery. The metacarpal joint is crushed and he will have to put in a plate and screws. He will also have to clean out any foreign material he finds. You could see the small slivers of wood from the forearm of the gun as well as metal from the gun. Cole has gotten pain meds at this time and is out of some pain. By 1:00 we are in ER holding area. They get him ready and take him to surgery. Winston left to get his dogs put back in the pens for him. Cole is worried about his dogs! It will be a few hours of surgery.

What the day may bring continued…

Now Cayla and I do panic….we do have Kylie….she is not dressed. Cayla calls Sarah, Cole’s girlfriend. I wanted to wait until I got there..check it out..then call her….I knew she was going to be upset & I thought someone might need to drive her there. I did not tell Cayla all of this.

We were running around from room to room trying to find my boots and purse, got the boots…purse in car. What to do with Kylie???? Cayla, get her on some clothes, take her to Ms. Janie’s. I leave, flying to SGMC. I called 911 & let them know he was on his way to have them ready for him when he arrived! Call WB again….tell me again what happened. He did, I still can not grasp it..hang up and call Ma-in-law. Hang up…call Kevin let him know what happened. I am worried that it is worse than the hubby made out. Will he have all his fingers or a hand??? That is what is going through my mind, can we get a robotic hand??? Drive faster…get to SGMC….walk in with Sarah,  go to desk. I told the registrar that my son was brought in with a gun wound to his hand. I would like to see him. She said, that his Dad was with him and that I would have to wait….I told her…no, you can tell his Dad to come on out, he has been in there long enough and Mom is here and I will see my son! Call him. The other girl said…he is good, he walked in….I do not care…I want to see him! I went and stood by the wall with my hands crossed over my chest. The lady looked at the girl beside her, then they looked at the lady who gave out the passes. They did not want to call the Daddy & tell him to come out!!! She gave me a pass & sent me right on back. Next blog coming soon!

You just never know what the day will bring!

Today, Cayla and I are working on paper work for college. Casey is at class. Winston and Cole are quail hunting. A man that Cole guides for wants him to work a dog he has, Cole is good at that…very patient with animals. At around 11:45 I get a call from Winston…Jill, what are you doing? Paper work…why? He is stalling…really does not want to tell me what has happened!!! Well, I am on my way to the hospital, Cole’s gun blew up on him and his hand is hurt. What??? repeats previous sentence! Me….how did that happen? I do not know….it just blew up where he was holding it with his left hand while pulling the trigger with his right hand, it is his thumb….he is in lots of pain…(which I can hear in the background)…my hubby does not panic, but this time he was….now, he is trying to hurry and talk on the phone…but he is very concerned I can hear it in his voice. He assures me that he will be OK. Thank goodness Bill Washknock was with them and kept an eye on Cole on the way to SGMC. Go to next blog for next section!
